Peru's Holy Week: Long weekend is expected to mobilize 1.8 million travelers nationwide

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) projected that during the long holiday for Holy Week, from April 17 to 20, approximately 1.8 million visitors would travel across the national territory, generating a positive economic impact of US$212 million and consolidating this holiday as one of the most relevant events for domestic tourism in Peru.

The government agency emphasized that this behavior not only benefits traditional tourist destinations but also boosts the development of emerging destinations, promoting decentralization and regional economic development.

According to the study "Economic Impact of the Holy Week Holiday 2025," prepared by Mincetur, tourists will spend, on average, S/434 (US$116) on their trips, allocating those resources to transportation, lodging, food, and tourist activities.

Tourists are expected to stay between three and four nights in their destinations, according to Mincetur's study.


Main destinations and type of travel

The most visited destinations during this holiday will be Lima (25%), Ica (12.7%), Cusco (10.5%), La Libertad (8.9%), Arequipa (7.3%), Ancash (5.2%), San Martin (4.9%), Cajamarca (4.7%), Junin (4.6%), Lambayeque (3.8%), and Ayacucho (2.9%).

The reasons that motivate the choice of these places include good weather (59.5%), gastronomy (40.4%), geographic proximity (23.8%), and the diversity of tourist attractions (16.7%).

67.7% of tourists will travel outside their region of residence, with family trips (31.5%) and individual trips (25.7%) being the most common types.

52.5% will stay at the homes of family or friends, followed by 1- or 2-star lodgings (28.3%) and 4- or 5-star hotels (7%); 6.9% will prefer 3-star hotels.


Means of transportation

As for means of transportation, the use of interprovincial buses will predominate (77.1%), followed by private vehicles (11.8%) and airplanes (5.6%).

It is worth noting that 88.8% will organize their trip independently, while only 7.1% will purchase tour packages and 4.1% will book local tours.

The average hotel occupancy rate will be 71%, and 82% of accommodations will maintain their rates, while 12% will apply increases of up to 25% due to high demand. 78% of visitors will be domestic travelers, while 22% will come from abroad.

Regarding the reasons for travel, leisure and recreation stand out (51.7%), followed by visiting family or friends (48.4%). In Lima, rest is the main motivation (58.8%), while visiting loved ones prevails in the country's interior regions (50.1%).
