The new season of Black Mirror has been announced and it will be returning this April. But fans are puzzled over what the new trailer means.
In true Black Mirror style, it is clear that you can see a commentary on the rise of technology, specifically AI, in today’s society. There will be six episodes in the new season, and it is said that you can expect a mix of genres and styles with two of the episodes being feature length.
The creator of the show Charlie Brooker told Netflix's fan event, Tudum, that the new season will be “a little bit OG Black Mirror.” For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter
He added: “It’s back to basics in many ways. They’re all sci-fi stories — there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way. There’s definitely some disturbing content in it.”
In the trailer, we can see many references to former episodes, one of which shows that there will be a sequel to the season four episode, USS Callister. The original episode depicts a video game programmer inventing a simulated reality where he’s captain of a spacecraft and his co-workers are his crew. Similar to other Black Mirror episodes, the sci-fi adventure takes a sinister turn.

SkyCharlie said: “Fans of the show will recognise the cast of a certain spaceship from one of our episodes reappearing.
“We’ve done a sequel for the first time in Black Mirror history. Normally, I kill off all the characters at the end of an episode, [but] I kept some of ’em alive. I’m growing as a human.”
Although, this isn’t the only reference to a past episode in the new season. It looks like Will Poulter will be returning as his character, eighties video game programmer, Colin Ritman who featured in the first ever interactive episode of the series, Bandersnatch.
The series first premiered in the UK in 2011 on Channel 4 and was later purchased by Netflix ahead of its third season in 2016. Since then, the series has seen countless celebrities guest starring including Miley Cyrus and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. Although, having watched the trailer, the new season is set to have an even bigger cast.
The series creator said: “We’ve got an embarrassingly stacked cast.”
