Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal has officially launched its new season of guided tours, with one of the first visitors being MP Rishi Sunak.
The tours, which began again this month, provide an insight into Britain's oldest working theatre in its original form, built in 1788 by actor-manager Samuel Butler.
Visitors are taken behind the scenes to explore hidden trapdoors, the old dressing rooms, and the distinctive Georgian auditorium, while knowledgeable guides share stories of the theatre's rich history and its remarkable restoration.Rishi Sunak (right) and volunteer tour guide Gerry Broadbent are pictured on stage at The Georgian Theatre Royal with the Trip Advisor Certificate (Image: Supplied)
Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond and Northallerton, said: "The Georgian Theatre Royal is a cultural gem in our community.
"It’s wonderful to see how the theatre continues to thrive and share its heritage with visitors from near and far, boosting the local economy."
The Georgian Theatre Royal attracts thousands of visitors each year and contributes to Richmond’s popularity as a leading tourist destination.
The tours have earned the theatre a prestigious reputation, including being awarded the 2024 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, placing it in the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide.
The theatre is consistently rated the number one thing to do in Richmond on TripAdvisor and proudly holds a coveted five-star rating.
The tours operate daily from Monday to Saturday, with tours starting on the hour between 10am and 3pm.
There is no need to book in advance, and visitors can simply turn up to join a tour.
This year, the cost of tours has been held at £8 per adult, with a reduced price of £3 for children.
The tickets are valid for 12 months and can be used for repeat visits during this time period.
Jo Mawhinney, chief executive of The Georgian Theatre Royal, said: "We are delighted to welcome Rishi Sunak and all our visitors back for another season of guided tours.
"The enthusiasm and support from our community and beyond mean so much to us.
"The tours are a vital part of our offering and an invaluable way to share the theatre’s incredible history."
