The Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved to write to the Presidency, informing it of alleged illegalities and insecurity and threat to lives and property caused by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS in the state.
The Assembly, also resolved to inform the international community of the threat to lives and property of people of Rivers State occasioned by operations of SARS led by it’s Commander, Akin Fakorade.
The resolution, is sequel to a motion moved on the floor of the House, yesterday, by the Majority Leader, Hon Martin Amarwhule, titled “Motion to Examine Security Situation in Rivers State.”
Moving the motion, which was brought under matters of public interest, as a backdrop of the fraca between security details of the state Governor, Barr Nyesom Wike and that of the Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi,  last weekend, Amarwhule regretted that SARS has been allegedly organised to unleash mayhem on the lives of people of the state.
Amarwhule, who recalled that the House had earlier passed a resolution demanding the trasfer of Fakorade, insisted that the House cannot allow Rivers State to go bark to the dark days, where life was nasty.
He, therefore, called on the House to rise and condemned the activities of SARS, pointing out that the governor is the Chief Security officer of the State.
In their contributions members representing Khana II, Hon Barinee Deeya, Obio/Akapor II, Michael Chinda and PHALGA III, Hon Victor Ihunwo, all condemned the activities of SARS, calling for the redeployment of it’s Commander.
However, the only female lawmaker, Hon Victoria Nyeche, who is on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hon Victoria Nyeche, called for investigation of the security details of both the governor and the Minister, instead of calling for the head of the SARS Commander.
On his part, another APC lawmaker, Hon Innocent Barikor, kicked against the motion, saying SARS has not been given fear hearing in the allegations.
Commenting, the Speaker, Rt Hon Ikunyi Owaji-Ibani, stated that the Nigerian state must recognise that it has a duty to protect lives and property of it’s citizens, including those of Rivers State. “Rivers State is under siege and if we are under siege we should plead with the federal government to free Rivers State”, he stated.
