GENEVA, Jan 24 (KUNA) -- Winners of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's Award will be selected during the 138th session of the World Health Organization (WHO), scheduled on January 25-30, the Kuwaiti Minister of Health announced on Sunday.
Dr. Ali Al-Obaidi, who made the announcement upon his arrival at Geneva International Airport, explained that the award in the category, health care for the elderly, would be distributed on sidelines of the forthcoming WHO General Assembly.
Speaking at length about the session agenda, the senior Kuwaiti official said participants in the meetings would discuss matters related to the WHO budget, reforms, staff training, funding and health partnerships.
Kuwait, in its capacity as chairman of the 62nd session of the WHO Middle East committee, will present a report to the Executive Board regarding the commission meeting, hosted by the country on October 5-8, 2015.
The report illustrates efforts exerted by the regional countries to enhance health security, namely precautions that have taken against the Corona virus, which causes SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and the Bird Flu. It also assesses implementation of relevant health laws and realization of sustainable development objectives.
Implementation of these objectives has been outlined within framework of action plans, with aim of securing high health standards for peoples of all ages, including health in various policies, Dr. Al-Obaidi added in the remarks to the Kuwaiti news network.
Conferees are also scheduled to follow up on implementation of the political declaration of the UN General Assembly with respect of precautions against communicable and chronic diseases, as well as combating them, preparing reports for reference to upcoming UN-level meetings, shedding light on the regional states' efforts for implementing the international action plan against these diseases during the period 2013-20. They will also examine reports about psychological health, medical education, mothers' nutrition and action against Polio.
There are other topics of paramount significance in the agenda, he said, such as irregularities in making babies' food, in addition to a host of other issues such as facing violence, precautions against non-communicable chronic diseases, strategies against Aids, Viral Hepatitis and diseases transmitted in sexual intercourse, within the 2016-21 plan.
Moreover, the meeting will see examination of the sustainable development plan till 2030, role of the health sector in safe management of chemical materials and coping with air pollution.
Furthermore, other files to be open at the table relate to the international plan concerning old age, implementation of international health regulations and rules, the international scheme against antibiotic resistance, clamping down on dealing in placeboes or poor-quality drugs, beside severe shortage of medicines, safety of baby medicines, emergency measures against the Bird Flu and public health emergency.
Up to 33 states are taking part in the marathon sessions, marked with a lengthy agenda of health issues of concern for all nations of the globe. (end) ta.rk
